May We Suggest…The In-Betweeners on BBC America

(This is our first guest post we have ever done and it is brought to you by our French friend, Le Foosk.)

The majority of television shows that focus on high school tend to be worthless.  There are of-course exceptions like “Friday Night Lights”, the best show on TV right now, “Freaks & Geeks”, the best show on TV ever and very underrated “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.”   Seriously, if you are not watching “Secret Life” you need to start doing so immediately.  This show is the definition of “it’s so bad it’s good, perhaps even great.”

Time to add a much needed fourth to the list.

“The In-Betweeners” (BBC America, Wed @ 930pm) is like the original “American Pie”, i.e 4 loser-ish high school dudes who only want to get laid and drink, crossed with the cringe humor made famous on the original version of “The Office.”  Sound good?  Add in the fact the guys curse like crazy, make fun of each other constantly, never get laid and are always on the verge of getting beaten up and you have comedy gold, as well as horrible flashbacks to some of your own high school experiences, unless you were one of those cool guys and if so, go fuck yourself.   Oh, and it’s a British sitcom, meaning right off the bat it will be better than roughly 80% of the shows currently on TV.

Do yourself a favor and check it out online since the Season 2 finale is tonight.

Michel Gondry- “The Thorn in the Heart”

Michel Gondry’s latest…opening soon at the Village East.

Runk…Superdive

Sure, it has labeled itself a dive bar (even though it really isn’t)…and yes, it tries to hard to be trashy…and yes, any hipster worth his salt hates “trying” at anything…but the beer is still cold and the girls are still drunk…so we give Superdive the old Runken salute.

May We Suggest…Bonnaroo Total Access

This is the way to do Bonnaroo-Total Access Style…includes a tour bus with room for up to eight people to sleep and a spot on-stage for all main stage performances…don’t be so cheap…it’s only 18K.

Hill Country Fried Chicken…Coming Soon

2010_03_hillcountrychick.jpg

BBQ joint Hill Country is opening a fried bird spot…our reaction…Yes, Yes, Yes,Yes, Yes, Yes,Yes, Yes, Yes,Yes, Yes, Yes,Yes, Yes, Yes,Yes, Yes, Yes!

Saïd Sayrafiezadeh-”When Skateboards Will Be Free”

Adolescence is never easy…so with Saïd Sayrafiezadeh having divorced parents, one Jewish and one Iranian, life was chaotic and interesting…of course this could not be the easiest familial, religious and cultural background in which to grow up…oh, wait…did I mention that both of his parents were radical socialists heavily involved in the Socialist Party in the U.S and Iran?  And this is the background in which Mr. Sayrafiezadeh tells us his tale of growing up, attending socialist rallies, being scolded for eating grapes and learning of U.S Imperialism.  An excellent book and quick read, this touching book shows that no matter what your background, the challenges of growing up in a wacky family are universal. ( Saïd Sayrafiezadeh also has an excellent short story in the March 1, 2010 issue of the New Yorker)

May We Suggest…Bonobos Pants

I have been rocking Bonobos pants in the summertime since the company had a tiny little space on 16th Street (props to me I guess)…anyway they still put out the most comfortable, most stylish khakis and now they also rock dress pants, shirts and some other stuff…they have a private showroom to get fitted and you can order online…no annoying department store dressing rooms…Good looking Bonobos.

Scott Pilgrim v. The World

The first trailer of the adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim comic book series…looks decent.

The Hold Steady-”Boys and Girls in America”

Maybe it has been the spring weather, maybe the NCAA tournament or maybe that waitress at Blue Seats the other night, but I am feeling that springtime party vibe and not many albums encapsulate that feeling better than The Hold Steady’s classic “Boys and Girls in America”…I dare you to throw on Massive Nights and not want to drink a beer outdoors with a bunch of friends…”The guys were feeling good about their liquor run, the girls were kinda flirting with the setting sun“…this is What You Should Be Listening to Right Now…God knows I am.

Bark

After a night of booze and NCAA hoops in Bklyn, my buddy Deaner and I stumbled into Bark, the Prospect Heights locavore hot dog and burger joint.  At 1 am this place, and Prospect Heights in general, was bumping.  Once we regained our vision and focused on the menu, we ordered our food and ate like we had been drinking since noon.  Bark is known for their hot dog, and it was good. Crisp and light, with a nice crunchy skin and a soft, warm bun.  The onion rings were excellent (actually not THAT greasy), but the fries were average.  The real star was the burger.  It was perfectly seasoned, big, but not overwhelming and really hit the spot.  Yes, Bark is a little bit of a poor mans Shake Shack but it worked for me.  If your out in this ‘hood, check it out (drunkenness is optional, but helpful).
